Who Says Being Alone in Valentine’s not a Good Idea?

Often time people get “emo” about being alone or being single during this Valentine’s Day. They feel that this day seem to be equated to Good Friday or even all soul’s day. One of the evidences to this assumption is the dominance of the color black in all streets in the metro. No thanks to Piolo Pascual and the clear commercial, all of the sudden, black has been one of the predominant colors of today’s Valentines. This is the color that symbolizes defiance towards the traditional Valentine’s Day color, which is Red. To others, black seems to be significant since it’s symbolical to the idea of death or even the lost of hope… I met a few people earlier and one of them even said that this is “SAD”. I asked her, “Why the hell are you sad?” Then she just answered, “This is S-ingle A-wareness D-ay”. When she said that, I realized how drastic and dire can a day make to a person…

But honestly are we that shallow and air headed people that we let a day ruin our dispositions and all our optimism because we are alone in a day celebrated superficially? I just think that there’s no reason, or any good motivation for people to celebrate Valentine’s. It’s pointless. It looks like a masquerade party where people pretend. Up until at present, I cannot understand, “why celebrate a day of love when people can celebrate it every day… or even forever”

Don’t make me wrong. I am not bitter neither an individualist nor a people –hater, anti-social kind of person. But, you know what, being alone and just being with my own self is such a great and perfect celebration for me in this day.

Yes, the best thing about my Valentine’s Day is that I have spent it alone. Being alone for some seems to be one of the loneliest things in life. But in fact, it’s the most calming and the most exciting battle that a person can face. As David Mckay once said, “the greatest battle of life is fought daily in the silent chamber of the soul.” It is not just being alone that makes being alone a great day for me. Being alone helped me reflect and be whole once again. I think that in a world where everything seems to be fast paced, people have the rare opportunity to stop and to process everything that transpired in the day. But, luckily, I had the opportunity to realize that there are times when we just need to shut ourselves up and listen to our own selves. This made a lot of sense to me since I believe that to love means to give oneself to others.

I’m not 100% yet. Therefore, I shouldn’t rush and wait for the right time for me to be prepared enough to give my 100% to the person who I will be offering everything with forever.
